So Chairman Genachowski of the Federal Communications Commission, just played the Charles Durning role in a press conference this morning in DC on net neutrality & the open Internet. We public interest activists are dismayed to hear that:
1) The FCC is not going to even try to reassert its Title II jurisdiction to regulate the mess it’s contributed to but somehow the agency already has constitutional authority to reassert some control (which has me extremely dubious, but then I’ve been to law school & there learned to take nothing on faith)
2) Wireless & mobile broadband can (and likely will) be regulated differently than people accessing their broadband by an old fashioned cord (Ethernet or T-1 if you’re lucky enough to be able to afford that kind of access) So since video eats a lot of bandwidth so much for growing audiences on cell phones and laptops running wirelessly (those users are going to be told they have to pay more & the FCC will back the telecom companies in doing so)
Chairman Genachowski’s remarks are here if you want to read them. I need to see the actual order he’s entering (I haven’t yet) to give you all better understanding of what is really going on…sigh.
