The feisty Kenyatta Cheese joined us for class last night.
He talked about Know Your Meme and what it means to apply serious [I would say journalistic] practices to understanding memes—and by that, any event, instance, or personality that becomes meaningful to a community.
I was reminded of what Ruth Reichl writes about from the beginning of her career, trying to explain why she wanted to review food when it wasn’t valued by her community—she explains that she decided that each review could be a narrative, and that she could work to do it really, really well.
Kenyatta also talked about how memes are anti-market, and we went on to cultural hacking (Yes Men, etc.) and how we internalize culture is significant and hard to see (and remember) unless we document it.
